STAR CRATE Snapshots

The N64 look

Drag the slider. Left is what the game outputs; right is the same frame rendered the modern way. The N64 picture is soft, dithered and blurry on purpose, because that is what the console's hardware did to every frame.

The whole game renders into a tiny frame, then gets scaled up and pillarboxed like an old CRT.

16-bit colour

Every channel drops to 5 bits with an ordered dither, which gives the fine dot pattern in skies and fog.

Video blur

The console softened its own output horizontally. That smear is a big part of why N64 games look "warm".

3-point filtering

Textures are 8 to 64 pixels and use the N64's own triangle filter, not modern bilinear.

Painted lighting

Light is worked out per vertex and multiplied with colours painted on the models. Few textures, lots of gradients.

Fog, billboards, blobs

Distance fog hides the draw distance. Trees and coins are flat sprites that turn to face you, and shadows are round blobs.

The three stars

Pick a star on the star select, then go get it. Coins refill the pie-shaped power meter.

Top of the Windmill

Climb the plank steps that spiral up around the windmill tower. One of them rides up and down.

8 Red Coins

They're on the dock, a rock pillar, in the pond, out in the far meadow, on the cannon shelf, behind the hill, on a hut roof, and one inside a crate. Grab all eight and a star appears over the village plaza.

Captain Crowbar's Sky Deck

With two stars, the Sky Cannon opens and blasts you up to a floating checkerboard deck. Jump his shockwave, then stomp his head while his crowbar is stuck in the floor. Three hits wins.
